The Super Six light-heavyweight boxing tournament, that was to be held on August 9 at Emperors Palace, has been cancelled.

Golden Gloves Promotions and promoter Rodney Berman will now instead host a tournament in which Thabo Sonjica will defend his IBO super-bantamweight title against Roli Gasca from the Philippines.

The reason behind the cancellation of the Super Six tournament was the impending withdrawal of former IBO super-middleweight champion and main drawcard Tommy Oosthuizen, who would have returned to the ring after an absence of almost a year.

Other boxers set to have taken part in the tournament included Johnny Muller, Rayno Liebenberg, Roberto Bolonti, Denis Grachev and Wilbeforce Shihepo. Liebenberg and Grachev will still take part in the replacement tournament.

Speaking about the new tournament, Berman said: “Sonjica has emerged as one of South Africa’s most exciting boxers. While fighting mainly in the Eastern Cape he has won the IBO title.”
