Man dies four weeks after a scuffle in pub

MBOMBELA – A well-known local businessman, Mr Barry Ling, passed away on Thursday. Ling was seriously injured in an altercation at a local pub about a month ago and never fully recovered from his injuries.

A trusted source told Lowvelder he was at Marlin Pub & Grill that night and that Ling apparently got involved in a quarrel outside the pub, for reasons unknown. Although it seemed as if the other party did not throw a punch, a scuffle ensued and Ling fell and hit his head on the ground.

According to ER24, Ling was unconscious when they arrived at the scene. He was rushed to Mediclinic Nelspruit where he spent the next four weeks. Mediclinic Nelspruit confirmed that he had been admitted about a month ago.

Even though spokesman for the hospital, Ms Robyn Baard could not disclose the nature of his injuries, a source told Lowvelder that Ling was kept under sedation for a period of time. It seemed as if he had sustained severe head injuries during the incident. During his time in hospital he spent three weeks in the intensive care unit and a week in high care, before he was transferred to Macadamia Clinic. He spent a week in the facility before passing away on Thursday.

Shortly after the incident took place, the owner of Marlin, Mr Chris Naudé told the newspaper that Ling only sustained a concussion and that that it was not so serious.

Relatives are still in shock, but even more so that no charge had been laid. Police spokesman Capt Dawie Pretorius confirmed that no case had been opened.

Unsure of what exactly transpired on that night, friends say he was not the type of person who would get involved in any type of quarrel. A source told Lowvelder that the incident occurred around 23:00.

The paper afforded the family, his business and life partner the opportunity to give comment about what had happened. They all opted not to speak to Lowvelder. On his Facebook wall, a friend, Mr Jay J Botes said, “I am deeply saddened by the death of one of the best people I know. A kind man who became a very close friend. Barry Ling you are leaving a massive hole on earth! My sympathies and prayers go out to his family.”
