Team Infinita compete against Europe’s best

The riders, together with their teammates, Esias Joubert and Demarco Pillay, recently returned from a 21-day tour that consisted of nine races in Europe.

Team Infinita currently rank under the top-20 junior teams in the world.

“For most of the riders, the races were an eye-opener. It was unheard of for juniors to finish some of the tours, as they are brutal races,” said their coach, Bosseau Boshoff.

Dikkebus in West Flanders, Belgium was the first race they competed in. It was over 96 kilometres.

Ruben did the best of the bunch finishing 12th. Only 47 out of the 109 riders managed to complete the race.

In the second race, the GP Patton Nations Cup in Luxembourg, they competed as a national team.

Callum, Ruben and Ryan were in the lead bunch. The best-placed finishers, over 15 laps of the the nine-kilometre circuit, were Ruben and Ryan.

Callum rode exceptionally well in the first stage finishing with some of the top climbers in the world.

Next up was Menen Kemmel Menen in Belgium. It is one of Belgium’s biggest one-day cycling races, with over 30 teams competing. Once again Ruben and Ryan finished with the front bunch.

The fourth and fifth races were Dentergem (96 kilometres) and Ottenberg (86 kilometres).

“The guys did very well as a team. Ryan and Ruben placed in the top 10 at Ottenberg.”

Next up was Opwijk, over 96,6 kilometres. The average speed of the riders were 41,5 kilometres per hour. Ruben finished 11th, Ryan 15th, Callum 22nd, Demarco 55st and Sias 59th.

Their last race was Hooglede in Belgium. It is one of the oldest junior races in the world.

“It was the toughest race of the tour. There were a lot of crashes and mechanical problems, and only Ruben and Callum managed to finish. Overall it was a great experience for the youngsters.”

It wasn’t all work and no play for the riders. South African rider, Louis Meintjies, who competed in the Tour de France, organised tickets for the team.
