VIDEO: Watch as businesses burn in Komatipoort

KOMATIPOORT – Earlier today, several shops on the corner of Lawrence and Louw streets went up in flames after a fire which started in a nearby tavern spread and enguled the other business on the premises.

UPDATE –  January 22, 10: 21

KOMATIPOORT – It has now been confirmed that the fire started between 05:30 and 05:40 this morning, in a 24-hour tavern on the corner of Louw and Lourens street, in the vicinity of several Chinese shops. According to reports, witnesses heard a loud explosion, however it is unsure whether it could have been gas bottles or fireworks.

Initial reports on social media alleged that the fire had spread to the shops from a burning car, while another alleged that the fire was xenophobia-related.

Several people were trapped inside the building, but were rescued in time. At this stage, it remains unclear what caused the fire which has since been contained.

The scene was secured by Securicon Emergency Management Services. The fire department is alleged to have arrived at 07:52.

KOMATIPOORT – Earlier this morning, Lowvelder received news about chaos which has ensued in Komatipoort.

Reports are that several businesses in the town are currently on fire.  The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed, however our journalists are currently at the scene and will be be sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
