MBOMBELA – The Mpumalanga Department of Basic Education recently relaunched a telephonic helpline called Dial-a-Tutor, to assist matriculants who need questions answered or work explained while studying at home.

Spokesman for the department, Mr Gerald Sambo, said learners can call the helpline on 087-805-1350 from Mondays to Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00.

“This call is at no charge to a learner even if they use a cellphone. The system has been designed in a way that, when a learner phones, it will automatically terminate the call and immediately call back,” he said.

He also said the line is very effective because learners are able to receive immediate assistance when they experience challenges during their studies after hours. He added that learners faced problems in mathematics, physical science, accounting, geography and English.

The department announced on September 30 that it was ready to oversee this year’s matric examinations. About 56 000 full-time candidates will sit for these examinations. Another 5 384 part-time candidates will also write.According to the department, learners are utilising the helpline.

The department is even receiving calls from learners from other provinces.
Apart from the Dial-a-Tutor programme, the department is coordinating interactive radio lessons in partnership with Ligwalagwala, Ikwekwezi FM and 13 other community radio stations Mondays to Thursdays from 14:30 to 15:30.
