Horrific accident on N4 claims two, injures four

ALKMAAR – Two people were killed and four others – including a child – critically injured in a head-on collision on the N4 yesterday. This was the second fatal accident on this stretch of the highway in three weeks.

Like Ms Kara de Pradines (21) who died on March 1 when her vehicle overturned, Ms Henriëtte Pretorius was also less than a kilometre from her home when the bakkie she had been travelling was involved in the accident. It occurred at about 08:30. Read: Hoogswanger vrou sterf in ongeluk

According to a preliminary investigation on the scene, it looks as though the right front tyre of Pretorius’ vehicle had burst, causing her to lose control. She veered into the lane of oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a Mbombela-bound minibus taxi.

Fire-and-rescue and various ambulance services rushed to the scene. Firemen had to free passengers with the Jaws of Life. Two occupants of the taxi, one of whom was the driver, were declared dead on the scene. Pretorius’ husband, Gert, arrived at the scene and was visibly shocked. He was supported by Mr Jos Helling of the fire brigade and Ms Kim Habib of ER24. The couple has been living in the area for two years.

Pretorius was taken to a nearby hospital and was still being treated in casualties at the time of going to print. *

In another accident on Saturday morning, two people died and four sustained serious injuries in a collision on the R40.

It is alleged that one of the two vehicles involved didn’t heed the red traffic light at the R40/government boulevard intersection just after midnight.

A Volkswagen Golf, which had reportedly been travelling in the direction of White River, collided with an oncoming Mercedes-Benz. One of the occupants was declared dead on the scene and a second was taken to hospital in critical condition. Other trapped passengers were freed by the Jaws of Life and also taken to hospital. A second occupant later died in hospital.

* Lowvelder has been informed after the paper has gone to print, that a third person had passed away in hospital.
