WHITE RIVER –  A trip to the summit of the Legogote Mountain turned into tragedy when a 53-year man slipped and fell to his death on Saturday.

He was Mr Dawid Gerber (53), finance manager at Petra Institute for Children’s Ministry.

According to a media statement by the college, a group of seven people, consisting of staff members and residents of Petra, “a friend” and a German visitor, went up the mountain early that morning to “enjoy the breathtaking views from the summit of the Legogote Mountain”.

“After spending some time on the summit with its 360 degree view of the Lowveld, the group proceeded down through a narrow crevice – one of only two possible routes.

“Coetsee went down first with five-year-old Niki, with the rest of the group following. To his horror, he saw a body falling past him and realised it to be that of Gerber,” the statement read.

Staff of the institute as well as members of the public often walk up the Legogote, but this is the first accident known of since 1990, when the institute took up residence on the property.

It seems that Gerber wanted to explore another route down. However, even though it looks like an easier route from the top, it is covered with slippery grass and ends in a sheer drop of several meters.  He apparently lost his footing and fell to his death.  He is survived by his mother, brother, sister and fiancé.

Emergency services as well as the Off Road Rescue Unit (ORRU) assisted in retrieving the body. “The institute expresses their gratitude towards all the emergency services that assisted, especially ORRU for their professional assistance.
