Pensioner in ICU after RDP house dispute

TEKWANE NORTH – A 60-year-old man is fighting for his life in the ICU at Rob Ferreira Hospital after he was attacked by community members over an RDP house dispute on Tuesday afternoon.

Spokesman for Daantjie Police Station, Lt Jabu Ndubane, said the police are investigating a case of grievous bodily harm. No arrests have been made.

Mr Elmon Moyane was found unconscious by police near his new house.

Ndubane said Moyane suffered injuries to his upper lip, cheek and left eye.

“We were told that he is not from the area and was considered illegible to receive a house in the new settlement,” said Ndubane.

She added that he is in coma. Police have not traced his family.
People who were illegally occupying RDP houses which had not yet been allocated, went on a rampage on Tuesday afternoon and forcefully removed rightful occupants.

According to an eyewitness, the pensioner was attacked despite producing his title deed to prove that he was the legal owner.

Housing allocation in the area has been marred by violence.
Residents who have been demanding houses have executed illegal evictions and victimised occupants.

In a separate incident, angry protesters burned tyres outside houses they believed were acquired illegally.
