N4 blocked as traffic accident kills three

MBOMBELA – Three were killed and six others were seriously injured when a Toyota Avanza and BMW X3 collided between the Montrose T-junction and Mashoboto Farm on Sunday morning.

They were transported to Rob Ferreira Hospital and Mediclinic Nelspruit.

According to Joseph Mabuza, spokesman for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, one of the six was critically injured.

“It is believed that the Toyota Avanza, which was coming from the Johannesburg direction, lost control and collided into the side of the BMW, travelling from the direction of Mbombela. The accident reconstruction team will proceed with the investigation and then we will be able to give more information,” Mabuza told Lowvelder.

Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha said all the people involved in the accident were women.
He said paramedics arrived at the scene and found accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles consistent with that of a high-impact collision littering the roadway.

“The impact on the Avanza was so great that the back seat with three females was ripped out and ejected from the vehicle.” After medics examined the injured it was found that three women trapped in the Avanza had died on impact.

“The three who were ejected were found lying on the roadway, two in a critical condition while one was seriously injured. The four women in the BMW also sustained serious injuries.”

Paramedics worked tirelessly on the scene to stabilise the injured before they were transported to Rob Ferreira Hospital and Mediclinic Nelspruit.

It was a very busy day on the road, as it marked the end of a long weekend. The accident recovery caused the closure of the Schoemanskloof Road and resulted in heavy traffic jams on the N4 towards the turn-off. Drivers were urged by TRAC N4 to travel via Elands Valley or to use the Ngodwana Road.

Finally at around 15:00, the road was opened to traffic. TRAC said it moved slowly initially, but recovered later.
