BREAKING NEWS: Police arrest two rhino poachers on the R40

MBOMBELA – A shoot-out between police and three suspected rhino poachers occurred at around 12:00 today on the R40. This after organised crime had received intelligence about a vehicle which was coming from KwaZulu-Natal which was connected to rhino poaching.

Police Flying Squad’s Capt Pieter Smit said the White River K9 Unit had managed to stop the vehicle which was coming from Barberton towards Mbombela.

The vehicle was stopped near the Tshwane University of Technology on the R40. This is where the shoot-out occurred between the three suspects and the police. Two suspects ran away and one remained in the vehicle.

Police arrested the man in the vehicle and found a large rhino horn hidden in the back bumper.

ACS Security operations manager JJ Bezuidenhout arrested the suspect with the assistance of Bossies Community Justice’s Albert Gryvenstein  in Ruby Street.

Provincial police spokesman Sgt Gerald Sedibe said the police arrested the men who are both 31 years old. “We have charged them with possession of rhino horn.”

He said the third suspect was still at large.
