Curro dominate provincial medium school finals

In 2016, their u/13 and u/14 rugby teams were Mpumalanga Medium School winners. Now in 2017, the u/14 and u/15 teams are again provincial winners.

The u/14s have had an outstanding year to date, having won 15 out of 16 matches so far – including impressive victories against Kearsney College and Hoërskool Garsfontein.

The Mpumalanga Medium Schools Rugby Finals were hosted by Hoërskool Hoogenhout in Bethal.

The u/14s final was against another local team, Uplands College. The Uplands coaches were hungry for a win, having previously lost to this Curro team. This showed in the first quarter of the match, where Uplands came out firing and had the majority of the possession.

Uplands had a very direct game plan, and used the possession to pick and drive the ball up the centre of the field. Curro’s defence managed to withstand the multiple Uplands attacks, and when Curro eventually regained possession, they showed great skill in exiting their 22-metre area and moving play downfield. From this they scored three converted tries and ended the half 21-0 up.

In the second half, Curro played high-tempo rugby and used the width of the field to outstrip the Uplands defence. Curro’s runners continually made line-breaks and were able to offload in the contact situation to score another six tries in the second half to end as 57-0 winners.

In the u/15 final it was Curro Nelspruit against Hoerskool Barberton. These two teams were in the final last year, which Curro won in the dying seconds of the match. This year Barberton were out for revenge.

After a long holiday, the players were eager to play. This showed in the expansive rugby played by the teams. Unfortunately the high number of unforced errors abated any early scoring opportunities.

Both teams continued to play attacking rugby, but some strong runs by Curro’s forwards gave them the advantage going into half time 19-0 up. In the second half Curro had the majority of the possession, and used their bigger forwards to create quick ball for their backline.

Barberton defended admirably, but could not withstand the continued pressure with Curro running out 36-0 winners.

On Saturday August 12, Curro Nelspruit will be hosting the Virseker Beker quarter-finals as well as the Mpumalanga Cross Country Championships.
