Rico claims open-water title

Thelise Saunders, who has been included in the final team to represent her province at the Golfinhos Sprint Gala in Maputo, took first place in the 3 000-metres open women’s category with a time of 39 minutes and 22 seconds.

Chris Staples (veteran men) completed the long distance of 3 000 metres in 43 minutes and 33 seconds to claim a category first position.

Ehlanzeni Interhigh Swim’s senior victrix ludorum, Jordyn Minifie (open) thrashed the 1 500-metre circuit in only 18 minutes and 14 seconds and was closely followed by Frans Mentz (open) in a time of 20 minutes and 25 seconds.

Ernest Davis won the veteran men’s division in 21 minutes and 57 seconds while Donne Green took top honours in the female veteran’s category with a time of 25 minutes and 55 seconds.

Seven-time gold medallist Michelle Esterhuizen, who competed at the South African Masters Swimming 33rd Long Course and Open Water Championship, was crowned the 400-metre champion with a winning time of five minutes and 46 seconds.

Markus Steyn was the winner in the 400-metre junior men’s category and was followed by De Villiers Basson (open men) and Mareli Snyman (open women).

The next LowMed Open Water Swim event on November 5 will sanctioned as an official qualifier for the Midmar Mile.

LowMed will also host their annual trail run on Wednesday October 18 on the Stellenrust Farm just outside Mbombela.

Registration for this event opens at 17:00 the afternoon, whereafter the race will commence at 18:00.
