Lowveld Nomads drive for charity

Nomads also contributes to the furtherance of the sport through the identification of numerous development programmes in underprivileged areas, as well as assisting disabled golfers throughout the country.

Its involvement in the community and the assistance of those less fortunate are epitomised in the words of the Nomads creed, taken from the renowned extract of The Meditations of John Donne (1573-1631):

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind, and therefore should never send to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee”.

Vice-captain Luigi Colmanet, Rustig Ouetehuis manager Liza Reniers, Cleopas Maseko of Thembalethu Nkomazi and Alan South of
Bonanza Shop Equipment who presented each institution with a voucher for R5 000 to spend on equipment.

Every year Nomads clubs throughout South Africa host various charity days to generate funds to enable them to undertake identified projects. This initiative was started by Andrew Mentis, founder of Nomads in 1960, hence the name.

To date Nomads countrywide have contributed in excess of R36 million to charities, while Lowveld organisations have benefited in excess of R2,7 million since the inception of the club in 1996. The 2017 Lowveld Nomads Andrew Mentis Golf Day was held on Sunday November 5 at Mbombela Golf Club. The course looked pristine with sponsors’ banners adding colour to the greens.

A full field of 132 players, a mix of Nomad golfers, their friends, business associates and sponsors were all on good form as they teed off on a warm sunny morning in Nelspruit. Everyone was in good spirits and plenty of laughter and banter could be heard on the course.

The prize-giving followed at which presentations were made to the selected Lowveld beneficiaries:

Rustig Ouete Huis in White River, which cares for the aged and Alzheimer’s patients:
A cheque of R100 000 was received by Liza Reiniers which will be used to build a new sluice room. This will improve sanitation and make the job of the care givers easier who work under trying circumstance at times. Liza Reiniers expressed their gratitude and jokingly commented that some of the nomads should be signing up soon as space is limited.

Rustig Ouetehuis manager Liza Reniers, Lowveld Nomads vice captain Luigi
Colmanet, Sally McKibbon and Cleopas Maseko of Thembalethu Nkomazi.

Thembaletu Nkomazi, who takes care and feeds HIV orphans, supports many community based home care centres in the area, provides extra classes for children in the community and runs a seedling project providing vegetable and seedlings to the community to help them sustain themselves:
Cleopas Maseko received a cheque of R70 000 which will go towards a security fence for the nursery. This has already been completed. The remainder of the funds will go towards necessary maintenance of the class rooms and community hall. Cleopas Maseko expressed their thanks and commented that since the security fence has been erected their problem with theft has abated.

In addition, each charity was presented with a voucher for R5 000 from Bonanza catering equipment (Nomad, Alan South) which can be used for kitchen equipment. Both charities have many mouths to feed and this will assist them in their task. All of this would not be possible without the generous donors and sponsors which recognised the difference that Nomads as a golf organisation aspired to make in the community.

“We have been amazed by the giving spirit in our Lowveld Community. Even in tough economic times, the donations have been fantastic and we can’t thank the sponsors enough,” said Luigi Colmanet, chairman of the Andrew Mentis
committee 2016 and vice-captain of Lowveld Nomads.
