Woman killed falling out of van

Crime Scene - Do Not Cross

MBOMBELA – A woman was killed on the R40 just across from  Toyota on Sunday afternoon, when she fell out of a moving van. SAPS said it is still unclear whether she jumped or was pushed.

Police spokesman, Capt Dawie Pretorius said a man was arrested later that day and appeared in court on Monday on charges of culpable homicide, failing to stop at an accident and failing to report an accident.

He was apparently driving with the victim in a Volkswagen Transporter. Police could not name her, as her next of kin had not been notified.

An eyewitness told Lowvelder that he saw a woman falling out of the passenger door of a moving vehicle.

Hi-Tech Medical Services operations manager, Freek Esterhuizen said he could tell from her injuries that she had either been pushed out of, or thrown herself out of a vehicle, as her injuries were not that of a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle.

They received a call to the scene at around 12:23. “She had already perished from her head injuries when we arrived,” he added.

Little is known about the victim at this stage, except that she was a staff member at McDonalds Riverside.

“At this moment we are still gathering information on exactly what happened, as we need to speak to more witnesses.

“We also need to monitor all the CCTV footage of the scene,” Pretorius said.

At the time of going to press, the court proceedings were ongoing.
