UPDATE –  Hoedspruit Farm Watch is offering a R50 000 reward for any information received, leading to the successful arrest of those involved in and responsible for the shooting and murder of Christo Redelinghuys (60) on November 19 on the farm Jonkmanspruit.

HOEDSPRUIT – There was no clear motive for Christo Redelinghuys’ (60) murder on Sunday night. The SAPS said nothing was stolen during the attack.

He was hit by a single shot fired from a shotgun on his farm outside the town.

Limpopo police spokesman, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the police were looking for three suspects.

According to AfriForum, 80 people had been killed in farm attacks this year.

Hoedspruit Farm-Watch secretary, Jane Depradines, said Christo and one of his daughters went outside at around 20:30 when they heard the dogs barking.

“When they returned to the house they saw three armed men coming around the corner. When Christo asked what they wanted, they shot him without answering him,” she said.

He was wounded, but managed to get his daughter and himself back into the house. She was not hurt.

They phoned for assistance but Christo died from his wound before help could arrive.

Depradines said the suspects fled on foot. “We tracked them, as we could see which direction they went, but we lost them.”

The police were called and responded swiftly. A manhunt and investigation followed.

Ngoepe confirmed that the suspects had fled the scene without taking any items.

Christo is survived by his wife, Retha, and his daughters, Retha Jr, Hester, Louise and Christina.

Heartfelt condolences poured out on social media for the family:

Mariska Slabbert wrote that her heart was sore for Christo’s wife Retha and his four daughters. “It is so sad that he was taken away in such a horrific manner. When I think about Christo, I think about how he would stand next to the sports field when his girls were still in primary school. He was always the team’s greatest supporter and would always yell the loudest. He was a good man.”

When my father passed away, you didn’t think twice about opening your home to me and taking me in while I finished my matric. You gave me the world and more, I am so sad that you had to go in such a cruel way.”

Magda Honeyball wrote that Christo had been a giant of a man. “He left deep footprints in my heart. Rest in peace, Christo. Our hearts go out to Retha and the girls. All the best in these trying times, and much love.”
