Another senior ANC member joins EFF

With this year’s local government elections around the corner, yet another senior African National Congress (ANC) member in Mpumalanga has joined the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Last week, the former executive mayor of Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Khosi Mkhonto, left the ruling party to join the EFF,Mpumalanga News reported.

Mkhonto served as executive mayor from 2006 to 2011.

“It’s true that the former mayor joined our party and we are looking forward to recruiting more new members,” said the EFF’s provincial chairperson, Collen Sedibe.

Mkhonto’s move comes after more than 200 former MK and Apla soldiers joined the EFF in Bushbuckridge.

In September, the former mayor of Mbombela, Isaiah Khoza, also left the ANC to join the EFF.

Khoza served as mayor of the Mbombela Local Municipality from 1995 to 2004 and, according to him, left the ANC after the party failed to redeploy him after his provincial-government contract came to an end.

Sedibe further suggested that welcoming prominent people proves that the EFF is gaining momentum in the province.

He said the EFF is planning to take all provincial municipalities and wards.

“We are not only targeting high-profile people, we also want ordinary people. I believe that we are on the right track,” Sedibe said.
